About Beni's Bread

The story of Beni’s Bread begins in 2018, when our daughter, Benicia—affectionately called “Beni”—was just 9 months old. On a warm summer afternoon, we were relaxing with family in the backyard, enjoying wine and dining outdoors. Suddenly, while nestled in her mother’s arms, Beni fainted without warning, only to regain consciousness moments later. We were concerned but didn’t suspect anything too serious. Yet, a short time later, it happened again, this time sending us to the hospital. A series of neurological tests revealed nothing conclusive, leaving us still searching for answers.

When the episode occurred a third time, we were referred to a range of specialists. After consultations with gastroenterologists, neurologists, and pediatricians, as well as several MRIs, we were finally directed to a pediatric cardiologist. Although a series of tests showed nothing unusual, the cardiologist informed us that Beni had a hole in her heart known as ASD. Our hearts sank as we learned that she would need open-heart surgery to repair it—but that we would have to wait until she was about 5 or 6, as her case wasn’t urgent. From that day forward, we carried this knowledge with us, hoping and waiting.

In the summer of 2024, Beni finally underwent her surgery. To our surprise, she was excited, perhaps too young at 6 years old to fully grasp the magnitude of it, but eager to have her heart “fixed.” She showed more bravery than we ever could have imagined. When we thought we needed to be the pillar of strength for her, it turned out she became that for us. Beni checked into the hospital on a Wednesday morning and, remarkably, was home smiling and recovering by Friday afternoon.

The team of doctors and PAs who performed her surgery were nothing short of miracle workers. Their skill, warmth, and compassion turned what could have been the hardest day of our lives into one that felt possible to endure.

Inspired by Beni’s journey, Shhh-Our-Dough’s mission now includes supporting children like Beni and their families through challenging times. Together with Beni, we’ve created “Beni’s Bread,” a heart-healthy, multi-grain loaf (with six grains representing her six years of living with CHD). For every loaf sold, $2 will be donated to the Harboring Hearts Foundation, helping families and patients affected by CHD.

We hope Beni’s Bread touches, nourishes, and brings comfort to your heart.
